Senpai Phil started Kyokushin karate in 1972 under Hanshi Steve Arneil, who founded the British Karate Kyokushin. His karate career has had starts and stops as both personal and career commitments impacted. During this time he also taught self-defence within his working environment and has been fortunate to gain experience in other combative disciplines. Returning to Kyokushin and attaining his Dan gradings has been the most rewarding experience, which has led to opening Seicho dojo and teaching and developing others, which brings great personal satisfaction.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced martial artist, Seicho Dojo offers the right environment for you to grow. Our doors are open for all who seek to excel in Kyokushin Karate.
The name Seicho is Japanese for Growth, establishing the ethos of the dojo in developing every individual; to be the best they can be.

Kyokushin is a traditional Japanese karate with etiquette and behaviours that are learnt over time, while having fun in a safe and welcoming environment.
The name SEICHO (SAY-CHO) is Japanese for GROWTH and the tree has always been a symbol that represents growth. This also resonates with Karate in that the tree grows strong because of its firm roots, just as a karateka develops from having established firm roots in the basics.
The tree of life forms part of many mythologies including both Celtic and Viking (Yggdrasil), and on a personal note resonates with my ancestral connection with Viking and Celtic heritage.
It represents the connection between life, the Earth and our ancestors.
